Brown Rice
Finishing (optional)
Method
Brown Rice
- 1
Rinse and measure
Place 1 cup brown rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold running water for 20–30 seconds, stirring with your hand, until the water runs clearer. This removes surface starch and prevents gummy rice. Drain well.
- 2
Toast (optional)
In a medium saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, heat 1 tablespoon butter or oil over medium heat. Add the drained rice and toast, stirring constantly, for 2–3 minutes until slightly nutty and aromatic. This step improves flavor and separate grains but can be skipped.
- 3
Add liquid and salt
Pour 2 1/4 cups water or broth into the saucepan and add 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt. Stir once to combine and bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
- 4
Simmer covered
When the liquid reaches a boil, reduce heat to low so the surface is barely simmering. Cover the saucepan with the lid and cook undisturbed for 40–45 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed and the rice is tender. Do not lift the lid during cooking.
- 5
Rest
Remove the pan from heat and keep it covered. Let the rice rest for 10 minutes to allow residual steam to finish cooking and to settle the grains.
- 6
Fluff and serve
Remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains. Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt if needed.
Finishing (optional)
- 7
Stir in 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley or cilantro, 1/2 tablespoon lemon or lime juice and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Serve warm as a side or base for bowls.
