Soda Base and Syrups

Method

Soda Preparation

1

Chill and prepare base

Chill the carbonated water thoroughly before mixing. If using a soda fountain machine, ensure the carbonated water and chosen syrup line are clean and at proper temperature per equipment instructions.

2

Measure syrup

Measure 2 tablespoons of your chosen fountain syrup for every 1 cup of carbonated water. For stronger flavor, increase syrup in 1/2 tablespoon increments, tasting as you go.

3

Mix gently

Pour the chilled carbonated water into a chilled serving glass over ice (if desired). Add the measured syrup to the glass. Stir gently with a long spoon 3–4 times to combine without knocking out too much carbonation. If using a fountain dispenser, draw the syrup and carbonated water per the dispenser's portioning (typically a 5:1 or machine-specified ratio).

4

Adjust sweetness

Taste the soda. If additional sweetness is desired, add up to 1 teaspoon of simple syrup or high-fructose corn syrup and stir gently. For craft variations, add 2 dashes of bitters to deepen flavor.

Ice, Garnish, and Variations

5

Add 1 cup of fresh ice cubes to the serving glass before or after pouring (preference: add ice before pouring to minimize foaming). Clear, fresh ice preserves flavor and appearance.

6

Garnish with a lemon or lime wedge on the rim and/or a maraschino cherry. If using a citrus wedge, squeeze lightly over the drink for a bright accent and drop it in.

7

For fruit-flavored fountain drinks, spoon 2 tablespoons of fresh fruit puree into the glass before adding ice and carbonated water. Gently stir to incorporate. If you want a lighter fizz, replace up to half the carbonated water with club soda.

8

Serve immediately to preserve carbonation. Provide a straw or spoon for scooping any fruit bits or garnishes.
