Potato Mixture

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Potatoes

Start by peeling the russet potatoes and then cut them into quarters. Place them in a large pot of salted water and bring to a boil. Cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.

  2. 2

    Drain and Mash

Once cooked, drain the potatoes and let them cool for a few minutes. Then, using a potato masher or fork, mash the potatoes until smooth. Allow them to cool completely.

  3. 3

    Mix the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooled mashed potatoes with the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and vegetable oil. Mix until well combined and a dough-like consistency forms.

  4. 4

    Shape the Tater Tots

Using your hands, take small portions of the potato mixture and roll them into small cylinders or balls, about 1 inch in diameter. Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Frying

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or a frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small piece of the potato mixture into it; if it sizzles, the oil is ready.

  2. 6

    Fry the Tater Tots

Carefully add the shaped tater tots to the hot oil in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them until they are golden brown and crispy, about 4-5 minutes per batch.

  3. 7

    Drain and Serve

Once fried, use a slotted spoon to remove the tater tots from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Season with additional salt if desired, and serve hot.
