Method
Chicken Preparation
- 1
Prepare Chicken
In a large bowl, combine the buttermilk, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Add the chicken breasts and marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight in the refrigerator for best results.
- 2
Bread Chicken
In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Remove each chicken breast from the buttermilk marinade, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the flour mixture until fully coated. Set aside on a plate.
Frying Chicken
- 3
Heat Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Fry Chicken
Carefully place the breaded chicken breasts into the hot oil. Fry for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
Gravy Preparation
- 5
Make Gravy
In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth and milk, stirring until the mixture thickens. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Cordon Bleu Option Preparation
- 6
Assemble Cordon Bleu
For the Cordon Bleu option, place a slice of ham and provolone cheese on each fried chicken breast. Drizzle with honey mustard before serving.
