Bread & Spread

Cheese (optional)

Toppings (choose two)

Optional finishing

Method

Bread & Spread

  1. 1

    Prepare the roll

Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium. Slice the hoagie roll lengthwise, leaving a hinge if desired. Spread butter evenly on the cut sides and brush outer crust lightly with olive oil.

  2. 2

Toast the roll cut-side down in the skillet 2–3 minutes until golden and slightly crisp. Remove and keep warm.

Meat & Cheese

  1. 3

Select one meat (turkey, ham, or roast beef) totaling about 4 oz. If you prefer it warmed, add the meat to the hot skillet for 30–60 seconds per side just to take the chill off and to develop slight browning.

  2. 4

If using cheese, place 2 slices on top of the warm meat on the bottom half of the roll so the residual heat slightly melts it (30–60 seconds).

Toppings

  1. 5

Choose two toppings from the list. Arrange them evenly over the cheese/meat: shredded lettuce, tomato slices, thin red onion rings, pickle slices, or banana peppers.

  2. 6

Season tomato and lettuce lightly with a pinch of salt and a crack of black pepper if using.

Sauce & Assembly

  1. 7

Choose one sauce. Spread mayonnaise or aioli on the top half of the toasted roll; brush mustard or vinaigrette thinly if those are chosen. Use about 1 tbs mayo/aioli or 1 tsp mustard/1 tbs vinaigrette.

  2. 8

Close the sandwich, press gently, and slice in half if desired. Serve immediately while roll is still slightly warm.

Notes

  1. 9

Scale quantities per sandwich. The recipe lists options so pick one meat, two toppings, and one sauce before assembling. For a crispier hoagie, toast the exterior a bit longer or finish under a broiler 30–60 seconds, watching carefully.
