Old Fashioned Base
Garnish & Finish
Optional: homemade demerara syrup (makes ~8 oz)
Method
Prepare Syrup (if using homemade)
Combine 1 cup demerara sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves and the mixture is clear. Remove from heat and cool. Transfer to a bottle and refrigerate. Use ½ oz per cocktail.
Build & Stir
Add ingredients to mixing glass
Place a mixing glass or pint glass on your work surface. Add 2 oz rye whiskey, ½ oz demerara syrup, 3 dashes Angostura bitters, and 1 dash orange bitters.
Prepare serving glass
Place one large ice cube into an Old Fashioned (rocks) glass.
Strain
Using a julep strainer or the mixing glass itself, strain the chilled cocktail over the large ice cube in the prepared serving glass.
Garnish & Serve
Express the oil from the orange peel: hold the peel over the glass, skin side down, and give it a firm squeeze to spray the essential oils onto the drink. Rub the rim of the glass lightly with the peel for extra aroma, then drop the peel into the glass. Add one Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick (or place it in the glass). Serve immediately.
