Coffee Base

Cream & Texture

Method

Coffee Base

1

Brew 2 cups of a strong dark roast coffee. If possible, brew slightly stronger than usual (use about 2 tablespoons coffee per 6 oz water) to stand up to the cream and ice. Let it cool to warm, then refrigerate briefly so it is chilled but not icy.

2

Pull one shot of espresso (about 1 oz) and set aside. If you don't have an espresso machine, use 1 oz very concentrated coffee (reduce water when brewing) or 1/4 cup strongly brewed coffee.

3

Combine the chilled brewed coffee, the espresso/concentrated coffee, and 1/4 cup cold water in a pitcher. Stir to combine.

Sweetener & Flavor

4

In a small bowl or measuring cup, dissolve 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar with 1 teaspoon maple syrup and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract. If the coffee is still warm, whisk the sweeteners into it until fully dissolved; if completely cold, briefly warm a few tablespoons of the coffee, dissolve the sugars, then return to the pitcher and stir.

5

Taste the coffee mixture and adjust sweetness if desired. The target is a noticeably sweet, molasses-forward profile that complements the dark roast.

Cream & Texture

6

In a separate mixing glass or small bowl, combine 1/2 cup whole milk, 1/4 cup heavy cream, and 1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk. Whisk vigorously (or froth with a handheld frother) for 20–30 seconds until slightly thickened and aerated — this will provide a rich, silky texture for the drink.

7

Place 1 cup of ice into a tall glass or two smaller glasses (this recipe yields roughly 2 servings; see servings below).

8

Pour the chilled coffee mixture over the ice, filling the glass about three-quarters full. Leave room for the milk mixture on top.

9

Slowly float the milk/cream mixture over the coffee by pouring it over the back of a spoon or down the side of the glass to create a layered look. Let the layers settle for a few seconds.

Finishing & Garnish

10

Sprinkle a pinch of fine sea salt and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon over the top of the cream to enhance the flavors and add a subtle savory note.

11

Add 1 teaspoon chocolate shavings or dust a light layer of cocoa powder on top. If using, finish with a small amount (about 1/2 teaspoon) of fresh orange zest for a bright aromatic lift.

12

Serve immediately with a straw and a long spoon for stirring; instruct guests to stir for a moment to blend the layers before sipping to enjoy the combined flavors.
