Method

Base & Wine

1

Combine alcohol

In a large pitcher (at least 2.5–3L capacity), pour 1.5 liters of dry red wine, 120 ml orange liqueur and 120 ml brandy. Stir gently to combine.

Fruit & Sweetener

2

Prepare fruit

Thinly slice 2 oranges, 1 lemon and 1 green apple. Remove seeds from slices if present. Add all sliced fruit to the pitcher with the wine mixture.

3

Dissolve sugar

Add 1/2 cup granulated sugar to the pitcher. Stir well until the sugar dissolves. If sugar is slow to dissolve, stir for 1–2 minutes or dissolve sugar first in 60 ml warm water and then add to the mixture.

4

Macerate

Add 2 cinnamon sticks and (optionally) 6 whole cloves to the pitcher. Gently muddle a few of the orange slices against the side of the pitcher with the back of a wooden spoon to release extra oils (do not over-muddle). Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the fruit to macerate and flavors to marry.

Aromatics & Garnish

5

Finish and serve

About 10–15 minutes before serving, remove the pitcher from the fridge. Add 500 ml chilled club soda or sparkling water to the sangria and gently stir to combine. Fill glasses with ice (about 1/2 cup per glass). Place a few pieces of the macerated fruit into each glass and pour sangria over the ice.

6

Garnish

Tuck 2–3 fresh mint leaves into each glass and add one small piece of orange or a cinnamon stick as garnish if desired. Serve with a long spoon or swizzle stick so guests can stir fruit up from the bottom.
