Prepare the glass
Chill a highball glass or copper mug by filling with ice or placing briefly in the freezer. Discard chilling ice before building or leave if using crushed/cracked ice as listed.
Add base spirits and citrus
Using a jigger, pour 2 oz vodka and 0.5 oz fresh lime juice into the chilled mug or glass. If you want a slightly sweeter, spicier profile, add 0.25 oz ginger syrup now.
Add ice
Fill the glass with cracked or crushed ice up to near the rim (about 1 cup as listed).
Top with ginger beer
Slowly pour 4 oz chilled ginger beer over the ice to preserve carbonation. Stir gently with a bar spoon 3–4 times to combine without flattening the ginger beer.
Optional float
If using, carefully float 0.25 oz orange liqueur on top by pouring slowly over the back of a spoon to add aromatic complexity.
Garnish & Serve
Garnish the drink with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim and a sprig of fresh mint tucked into the ice. Add a piece of candied ginger or a thin fresh ginger slice on a pick for an upscale touch.
Serve immediately with a short straw or stirrer. Encourage the guest to squeeze the lime wedge into the drink before sipping for brighter acidity.
Tools & Notes
Use a quality, spicy ginger beer (not ginger ale) for the trademark mule bite. Adjust ginger syrup quantity to taste if you prefer sweeter or spicier. For a lighter variant, reduce vodka to 1.5 oz and increase ginger beer to 5 oz.
Estimated OG/ABV will vary by vodka and ginger beer; serve cold. Makes one cocktail.
