Cocktail
Optional: stirred and chilled glass
Method
Cocktail
Prepare glass
If you prefer a very cold drink, place the rocks glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and let sit while you mix the cocktail; discard chilling ice just before serving.
Mix
Fill a mixing glass or shaker (not for shaking, but for stirring) with the 3 indicated large ice cubes. Pour in 1 oz gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz sweet vermouth.
Strain
Discard the ice from the chilled rocks glass (if you used ice to chill it). Place one large ice cube or sphere in the glass. Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared glass over the large ice.
Garnish
Express the oils of one piece of orange peel: hold the peel skin-side down 2–3 inches above the drink and give it a quick twist to spray oils onto the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as garnish.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly — a Negroni is spirit-forward and best enjoyed slightly cold with moderate dilution.
Optional: quick chill method
If you don't have a mixing glass, add the spirits to a shaker filled with ice and stir (do not shake) or shake briefly only if you prefer more dilution and a slightly frothier texture.
