Prepare glass
If you have a copper mule mug, chill it in the freezer for 5–10 minutes before assembling. If not, use a highball glass and fill it with ice to chill while you prep ingredients.
Add spirits and citrus
Remove the chilled mug or empty the glass of any melting water. Fill the mug about two-thirds with fresh ice (cubed or crushed). Pour 2 fl oz vodka over the ice, then add 0.5 fl oz freshly squeezed lime juice. If you prefer slightly sweeter cocktails, add 0.25 fl oz simple syrup.
Top with ginger beer
Slowly pour 4 fl oz of cold ginger beer into the mug to preserve carbonation. Stir gently with a bar spoon 2–3 times to combine the vodka, lime and ginger beer without flattening it.
Garnish and finish
Garnish with one lime wedge or wheel on the rim and an optional sprig of fresh mint and/or a thin slice of fresh ginger. Serve immediately while cold and fizzy.
Notes
For a stronger drink, increase vodka to 2.5 fl oz. For a nonalcoholic version, replace vodka with nonalcoholic spirit or additional lime juice and a splash of club soda. Adjust ginger beer amount to taste; spicier ginger beers will dominate the profile.
