Method
Cocktail Base
Prepare glass
Run a lime wedge around the rim of a chilled coupe or rocks glass. On a small plate, spread the coarse salt. Dip the moistened rim into the salt to coat. Set the glass aside.
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker add 2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz fresh lime juice, and 1 oz orange liqueur. If you prefer a slightly sweeter margarita, add 0.5 oz agave syrup (or 0.5 oz simple syrup as an alternative).
Add ice and shake
Fill the shaker with ice (about 3/4 full or roughly 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.
Strain and serve
Double-strain (use a Hawthorne strainer and, if desired, a fine mesh strainer) into the prepared chilled glass. If serving on the rocks, fill the glass with fresh ice and strain over the ice instead.
Garnish & Finish
Garnish the margarita with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim. Serve immediately.
