1

Prepare espresso

Brew 1 oz of fresh espresso and allow it to rest for 30–45 seconds so it cools slightly but remains hot enough to create crema. If you don't have an espresso machine, use 1 oz of very strong brewed coffee.

2

Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for a few minutes, or fill with ice and water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure the final drink is properly chilled.

3

Combine ingredients

Into a cocktail shaker add the freshly brewed espresso, 1.5 oz vodka, 1 oz coffee liqueur, and 0.25 oz simple syrup.

4

Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Seal and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds. Vigorous shaking is essential to create a silky, foamy crema on top from the espresso.

5

Strain and serve

Discard the ice/water from the chilled glass if you used it to chill. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne and a fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and ensure a smooth surface.

6

Garnish

Carefully place three coffee beans on top of the foam in a triangular arrangement as a classic garnish.

7

Serve

Serve immediately while the drink is cold and the foam is fresh.
