Method
Cocktail
Juice the orange
If you haven't already, juice fresh blood oranges until you have 2 oz (about one medium blood orange). Strain pulp if you prefer a smoother cocktail.
Dry shake (if using egg white)
Add 0.5 oz egg white to a cocktail shaker (no ice) with the blood orange juice, lemon juice, simple syrup, vodka and orange liqueur. Dry shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds to emulsify and build foam.
Wet shake
Add a handful of ice (about 1 cup) to the shaker. Shake hard for 10–15 seconds until well chilled and the outside of the shaker becomes frosty. If you did not use egg white, simply combine all liquid ingredients and ice and shake until chilled.
Double strain and serve
Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or rocks glass (over fresh ice if you prefer). Double straining removes ice shards and any remaining pulp for a silky texture.
Garnish
Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters on top of the foam (if present) and use a toothpick to create decorative swirls if desired. Garnish with a blood orange wheel or twist on the rim.
Serve
Serve immediately while chilled. Sip and enjoy the bright, slightly tart and floral flavors of the blood orange cocktail.
