Method
Matcha Base
- 1
Sift matcha
Sift 2 tsp matcha powder into a small bowl or matcha bowl using a fine-mesh sieve. Sifting prevents lumps and yields a smoother drink.
- 2
Bloom the matcha
Pour 60 ml hot water (about 175°F / 80°C) over the sifted matcha. Use a small whisk (bamboo chasen if available) or a small regular whisk to briskly whisk in a back-and-forth 'M' or 'W' motion until the matcha is fully dissolved and a light froth appears on the surface, about 15–30 seconds.
- 3
Sweeten
Stir in 2 tablespoons simple syrup while the matcha is still warm. Taste and adjust sweetness by adding up to 1 additional tablespoon if you prefer sweeter.
- 4
Cool slightly
Let the sweetened matcha sit for 1–2 minutes to cool so it won't melt the ice excessively when assembled.
Drink Assembly
- 5
Fill a 12–16 oz glass with 1 cup ice cubes.
- 6
Pour 1 cup cold milk over the ice, leaving a little room at the top for the matcha layer.
- 7
Slowly pour the prepared sweetened matcha over the back of a spoon or gently down the side of the glass so it floats on top and creates a layered look. If you prefer it mixed, pour and stir to combine.
- 8
Optional: Top with 2 tablespoons whipped cream for indulgence.
- 9
Garnish with a light dusting (about 1 tsp) of matcha powder over the whipped cream or the drink surface for an extra matcha aroma.
- 10
Serve immediately with a straw. Stir before drinking if you like an even sweetness and color throughout.
