Affogato Assembly

Espresso (if brewing at home)

Method

Affogato Assembly

1

Chill serving glass

Place a small serving glass or bowl in the freezer for 5–10 minutes before assembling. This helps slow melting once the hot espresso is added.

2

Scoop gelato

Place 2 generous scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream into the chilled glass or bowl. If the gelato is very hard, let it sit at room temperature for 1–2 minutes so scooping is easier.

3

Add optional liqueur

If using, pour 10 ml coffee liqueur over the gelato to add depth of flavor. This step is optional but traditional in some variations.

4

Pour espresso

Immediately after brewing (while it is hot and aromatic), pour 60 ml hot espresso directly over the gelato. The contrast of hot espresso and cold gelato should create a creamy, partially melted top.

5

Garnish and serve

Sprinkle 1 tbsp dark chocolate shavings and 1 tsp chopped toasted hazelnuts or almonds over the top if using. Serve immediately with a small spoon so the diner can scoop both melted coffee and gelato together.

Espresso (if brewing at home)

6

Grind 14 g of fresh coffee to an espresso-fine consistency. Tamp firmly in the portafilter and pull a 60 ml shot of espresso (~25–30 seconds extraction) using an espresso machine. If you don't have an espresso machine, brew 60 ml very strong coffee with a Moka pot or Aeropress and use it hot.
