Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Chop the Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic. Set aside.

Cooking the Meat

  1. 2

    Brown the Meat

In a large skillet or pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and ground pork. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 7-10 minutes.

Combining Ingredients

  1. 3

    Add Vegetables

Add the chopped onion, carrot, celery, and garlic to the browned meat. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 4

    Deglaze with Red Wine

Pour in the red wine, scraping the bottom of the pan to release any brown bits. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until slightly reduced.

  3. 5

    Add Tomatoes and Broth

Stir in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Add the bay leaves, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

Simmering the Sauce

  1. 6

    Simmer

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the sauce simmer for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the better the flavors will meld.

  2. 7

    Add Basil

In the last 5 minutes of cooking, stir in fresh basil leaves.

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 8

    Cook Spaghetti

While the sauce is simmering, cook the spaghetti according to package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water. Drain the pasta when al dente.

Serving

  1. 9

    Combine and Serve

Serve the Bolognese sauce over the cooked spaghetti. Garnish with extra basil if desired.
