Salmon Dip

Method

Salmon Dip

1

Prepare salmon

If using canned salmon, drain well and transfer to a bowl. Remove any large skin pieces and bones and flake the salmon with a fork. If using cooked fresh salmon, flake into small pieces and let cool slightly.

2

Combine base ingredients

In a medium mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth (use a fork or electric mixer). Stir in sour cream, mayonnaise, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard until evenly combined and smooth.

3

Add flavorings

Fold the flaked salmon into the cream cheese mixture. Add minced shallot, chopped dill, chopped capers, hot sauce (if using), black pepper, and salt. Stir gently to combine, keeping some texture from the salmon.

4

Adjust seasoning & chill

Taste and adjust seasoning with additional lemon juice, salt or pepper as desired. Cover the dip and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld (up to 2 hours). If the dip is too thick after chilling, stir in 1–2 teaspoons of water or extra sour cream to reach desired consistency.

5

Finish

Before serving, stir the dip and garnish with an additional sprinkle of chopped dill or a few whole capers if desired. Transfer to a serving bowl.

Toasted Baguette

6

Slice baguette

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Using a serrated knife, slice the baguette on a slight diagonal into 1/2-inch (1.2 cm) thick slices, about 20–24 slices from a 12-inch loaf.

7

Oil and season

Arrange the slices on a baking sheet in a single layer. Brush each slice lightly with olive oil (about 1/2 teaspoon per slice). If using, spread a thin layer of softened butter instead of or in addition to the oil.

8

Toast

Toast in the preheated oven until edges are golden and crisp, about 8–10 minutes, flipping once halfway through for even browning. For extra color, broil for 30–60 seconds at the end while watching closely.

9

Optional garlic rub

If using garlic, rub the cut side of the garlic clove over the warm toasted slices to impart a subtle garlic flavor.

10

Serve

Let the toasts cool slightly to room temperature so they crisp up. Arrange on a platter alongside the chilled salmon dip and serve immediately.
