Cocktail

Espresso infusion (makes extra, optional)

Method

Espresso infusion (optional, do at least 2 hours ahead or overnight)

1

Infuse vodka with espresso

Combine 1 tablespoon instant espresso (or 1 tablespoon finely ground espresso beans) with 1/2 cup neutral vodka in a clean jar. Seal and shake gently, then let sit at room temperature for 2–12 hours, tasting after 2 hours. Strain through a fine mesh sieve lined with coffee filter or cheesecloth into a clean bottle. Use 3 tablespoons per cocktail. Store leftovers refrigerated up to 2 weeks.

Boozy Coconut Whip

2

Chill and whip

Chill a mixing bowl and whisk (or use the chilled bowl of a stand mixer) for 10–15 minutes. Scoop 1/2 cup chilled full-fat coconut cream into the bowl. Add 1 tablespoon powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon dark rum, and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. Whip with an electric whisk or handheld mixer on medium-high until soft peaks form and mixture is light and airy (about 1–2 minutes). Taste and adjust sweetness or rum. Keep chilled until assembly.

Cocktail Assembly

3

Build and shake

Fill a cocktail shaker with 6 ice cubes. Add 3 tablespoons espresso-infused vodka, 1 ounce Mr. Black, 1 ounce cold brew coffee, 1/2 ounce walnut liqueur (or walnut syrup), and 2 dashes coffee bitters. Cap and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the exterior of the shaker is frosty and well-chilled.

4

Strain

Double-strain the mixture into a chilled coupe or rocks glass (use a fine mesh strainer if you want to remove tiny ice shards).

5

Top with coconut whip & garnish

Spoon or pipe a generous dollop (about 2 tablespoons) of the boozy coconut whip on top of the cocktail. Finish with a light dusting of finely grated walnut and, if desired, a tiny sprinkle of cacao nibs or an extra dash of coffee bitters for aroma.

6

Serve

Serve immediately while the whip is cold and the cocktail is chilled. Stir slightly if the guest prefers the whip incorporated; otherwise enjoy layered contrast between bitter coffee and creamy coconut.
