Assembly

Method

Patty

  1. 1

    Prepare the Patty

In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until just combined. Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties, about ½ inch thick.

  2. 2

    Cook the Patty

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Grilled Onions

  1. 3

    Sauté the Onions

In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Slice the onion into thin rings and add them to the skillet. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes.

Assembly

  1. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Place two slices of rye bread in the skillet. Top each slice with a slice of Swiss cheese, a cooked patty, and a generous amount of caramelized onions. Add another slice of Swiss cheese on top and finish with the remaining slices of rye bread.

  2. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

Carefully flip the sandwiches and cook until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Add the remaining tablespoon of butter to the skillet if necessary.

  3. 6

    Serve

Remove the patty melts from the skillet, slice in half if desired, and serve hot.
