Method

Cook Pasta

1

Boil Pasta

Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the pasta shapes and cook according to package directions until just tender (usually 7–9 minutes for small shapes). Reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the pasta and set aside.

2

After draining, toss the hot pasta with 1 tablespoon butter so it doesn't stick while you finish the sauce.

Prepare Sauce & Veggies

3

Cook Ground Meat

Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground turkey (or beef) and break into small pieces with a spatula. Cook for 5–7 minutes until no longer pink.

4

If using grated carrot, add it to the skillet with the meat in the last 2 minutes of cooking so it softens and adds natural sweetness.

5

Season the meat with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and dried oregano. Stir to combine.

6

Add Sauce and Veggies

Pour in 1 cup mild tomato pasta sauce and 1 cup frozen mixed peas and carrots (no need to thaw). Stir to combine and reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer gently for 4–5 minutes until the peas and carrots are warmed through and flavors meld. If the mixture looks too thick, add up to 1/4 cup reserved pasta water or milk to loosen slightly.

Combine & Finish

7

Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained pasta to the skillet with the sauce and meat mixture. Toss gently to coat all the pasta. If needed, add a splash of the reserved pasta water or the 1/4 cup milk to reach a creamy, kid-friendly consistency.

8

Add Cheese

Remove the skillet from heat and stir in 1 cup shredded mild cheddar until melted and evenly distributed. Taste and adjust seasoning with a pinch more salt or pepper if desired.

9

If serving to very young children, cool slightly before serving. Spoon into bowls and top with optional grated Parmesan and a sprinkle of chopped parsley for color.
