Method

Equipment Prep

1

Gather equipment

Select a brewer (drip coffee maker, pour-over, French press, or espresso machine). Have a kettle, scale, grinder, timer, and mug ready.

2

Heat water

Heat the filtered water to the proper brewing temperature: about 92–96°C (198–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let sit 30 seconds.

Coffee Brewing

3

Weigh and grind beans

Weigh 35 g (0.035 kg) of whole coffee beans for approximately 2 standard 8-oz (240 ml) cups (yield ~500 ml brewed coffee). Grind to grind size appropriate to your brewer: medium-coarse for pour-over, coarse for French press, medium for drip, and fine for espresso.

4

Pre-wet filter (if using paper filter)

If using a paper filter (pour-over or drip), place the filter in the dripper and pour a little hot water through it to rinse and warm the vessel. Discard the rinse water.

5

Bloom (pour-over / pour method)

Place the ground coffee in the brewer. Start timer and pour about 60–80 ml of hot water evenly over grounds to saturate them. Let coffee bloom for 30–45 seconds to release trapped gases.

6

Complete pour

After the bloom, continue pouring the remaining hot water in slow, steady motion until you reach 500 ml total water. Aim for a total brew time of 2.5–4 minutes for pour-over or drip; 4 minutes for French press before plunging; 20–30 seconds for espresso (using appropriate dose and pressure).

7

Plunge / Drain

If using a French press, after 4 minutes gently press the plunger down. If using pour-over or drip, allow all water to pass through the grounds into the server.

Finish and Serve

8

Pour and taste

Pour brewed coffee into a pre-warmed mug. Taste the coffee black first to assess strength and flavor.

9

Add optional additions

If desired, heat and froth 120 ml (0.12 l) milk and add to the coffee, or add 1 tsp sugar (adjust to taste). For flavored notes, stir in 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon or 1/4 tsp vanilla extract. A very small pinch (1/8 tsp) of salt can reduce bitterness.

10

Serve

Serve immediately while hot. Provide a spoon for stirring and offer additional milk and sweeteners on the side.
