Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

1

Combine and shake

Add the dark rum, vodka, Kahlúa, simple syrup, fresh lime juice and two dashes of Angostura bitters into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice (cubed).

2

Shake vigorously

Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

3

Prepare glass

Fill a chilled old-fashioned or coupe glass with fresh ice (if serving on the rocks) or leave chilled and strain into a chilled coupe for up to 3 ounces. If serving on the rocks, add 3–4 large cubes to the glass.

4

Strain and finish

Double-strain the shaken cocktail into the prepared glass using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove tiny ice shards for a cleaner texture.

5

Garnish

Express the lime peel over the drink to release oils, rub it around the glass rim and drop it in as a twist. Optionally float three coffee beans on top for aroma and presentation.

Serve

6

Serve immediately while cold. Sip and note the interplay of dark rum's molasses notes, Kahlúa's coffee sweetness, vodka's clean backbone and the lift from lime and bitters.
