Martini

Method

Prepare Glass

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place the martini glass in the freezer for at least 10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure it is well chilled.

Mix Cocktail

  1. 2

    Measure and pour

Add 2.5 oz gin and 0.5 oz dry vermouth into a mixing glass or cocktail shaker. Use a jigger for accurate measurement.

  2. 3

    Add ice

Fill the mixing glass with ice up to near the top so the liquid will be properly chilled and slightly diluted.

  3. 4

    Stir (preferred) or shake

Stir the mixture with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds until the outside of the mixing glass feels very cold (this gently chills and dilutes). If you prefer a shaken martini, shake vigorously for 8–10 seconds until well chilled; note shaking will produce tiny ice shards and more dilution.

  4. 5

    Strain

Discard ice or water from the chilled martini glass. Using a strainer, pour the chilled martini into the prepared glass, leaving the mixing ice behind.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 6

    Prepare lemon twist

If using a lemon twist, use a peeler or sharp knife to cut a 1/2-inch wide strip of lemon peel, avoiding the bitter white pith as much as possible. Hold the peel over the martini and give it a quick twist to release the oils, then wipe the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink or rest it on the rim.

  2. 7

    Or garnish with olive

If using an olive, spear one pitted green olive on a cocktail pick and gently lower it into the martini. For an extra touch, rinse the olive in a small amount of the vermouth before adding, if desired.

  3. 8

    Serve

Serve immediately while very cold. Optionally sprinkle a tiny pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of coarsely grated lemon zest over the surface for aroma if using the lemon garnish.
