Coffee (Decaffeinated) - Beverage

Method

Coffee (Decaffeinated) - Beverage

  1. 1

    Measure and grind

Measure 0.35 cups (about 56 grams) of decaffeinated whole-bean coffee for a 12-cup pot (standard drip ratio ~1:16 by weight). If using pre-ground coffee, skip grinding. For best flavor, grind to the appropriate consistency for your brew method: medium-coarse for drip or pour-over, coarse for French press, and fine for espresso.

  2. 2

    Heat water

Heat 12 cups (about 2.8 liters) of fresh cold water. For drip, pour-over, or French press aim for 195–205°F (90–96°C). If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let it rest 30 seconds before pouring.

  3. 3

    Prepare brewer

Place a clean filter in your coffee maker or set up your French press/pour-over. Pre-rinse a paper filter with hot water to remove paper taste and to warm the carafe; discard rinse water.

  4. 4

Bloom (for pour-over or drip with manual control)

If using pour-over or a manual drip method, pour just enough hot water (about double the weight of the grounds — roughly 120 ml) to wet all the grounds evenly and let them bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases trapped CO2 and improves extraction.

  5. 5

    Brew

Pour or run the remaining hot water evenly over the grounds according to your brewing method: - Drip machine: start the brew cycle and let it complete. - Pour-over: pour in slow, circular motions, keeping the water level consistent until all water has passed through. - French press: pour water, stir gently, cover and steep for 4 minutes, then press the plunger down slowly. - Espresso: tamp and pull shots according to your machine's guidelines. Total contact time should be ~4 minutes for French press, 2.5–3.5 minutes for drip/pour-over, and 20–30 seconds for espresso extraction.

  6. 6

    Serve

Pour the brewed decaffeinated coffee into a warmed cup or carafe. Taste and add optional milk/cream (about 2 tbs) and sweetener (about 1 tsp) as desired. Stir gently and serve immediately.

  7. 7

    Storage and leftovers

If you have leftover brewed coffee, cool it quickly and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Reheat gently — avoid boiling to prevent flavor degradation.

Equipment & additions

  1. 8

Grinder: Use a burr grinder for consistent particle size. Adjust setting to match the chosen brew method.

  2. 9

Filter/clean equipment: Ensure filters and the coffee maker are clean. Rinse paper filters to remove paper taste and warm the brewer.

  3. 10

Thermometer: Use to check water temperature when precision is desired; otherwise allow boiled water to rest 30 seconds to reach ideal brewing temperature.
