Bagels & Spreads
Method
Toasting & Assembly
Prepare bagel
Select one bagel variety. If using a frozen bagel, thaw at room temperature for 15–30 minutes or follow package thaw instructions.
Slice
Using a serrated knife, hold the bagel steady and slice horizontally through the middle to create two even halves. Place cut sides up.
Toast
Toast the bagel halves in a pop-up toaster or toaster oven on medium-high until golden brown and edges are crisp (about 2–4 minutes depending on appliance and bagel density). For a chewier interior with crispy exterior, toast one additional 30–60 seconds. For gluten-free bagels, use a slightly lower setting if your toaster tends to over-brown.
Butter option
If serving with butter: while the bagel is still hot, spread 1 tablespoon butter evenly over one or both cut sides so it melts into the surface. Return to toaster oven for 10–20 seconds if you want it more melted (optional).
Cream cheese option
If serving with cream cheese: spread 2 tablespoons plain cream cheese evenly on one bagel half. For a thicker layer, add more cream cheese to taste.
Additional toppings
Add optional toppings as desired: place smoked salmon (2 oz) over the cream cheese, scatter capers (1 tsp), add thin red onion rings (2) and tomato slices (2). Season tomatoes lightly with a pinch of salt and black pepper. For a sweet option, instead of cream cheese, spread 1 tsp jam or honey on the buttered half.
Serve
Assemble halves if desired (cream cheese/toppings on one half, plain or butter on the other) and serve immediately while warm.
