Method
Bagels & Spread
Toast bagels
Split the 4 bagels horizontally. Toast cut sides in a toaster or under a broiler until golden and crisp at the edges, about 2–4 minutes depending on equipment. Remove and set aside on a plate.
Prepare plain shmear
Place 1 cup chilled plain cream cheese in a bowl. Whisk with a fork for 30–45 seconds until smooth. If you prefer a slightly richer spread, fold in 2 tablespoons softened unsalted butter until fully incorporated. Taste and adjust texture; if too thick, add 1 teaspoon cold water and whisk to loosen.
Smoked Salmon Assembly
Season capers and salmon
Place the drained capers in a small bowl and roughly chop them if desired (this distributes their flavor). In a separate small bowl mix 1/2 teaspoon sea salt and 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.
Assemble bagel halves
Spread about 2 to 3 tablespoons of the plain shmear evenly over each toasted bagel half. Arrange 3 ounces (about 3 slices) of smoked salmon on top of the shmear on each half, folding the slices loosely for volume.
Add toppings
Top the salmon with a few rings of red onion (about 1 tablespoon per half), distribute capers (about 3/4 tablespoon per half), and sprinkle chopped fresh dill evenly (about 1/2 tablespoon per half). Squeeze a thin wedge of lemon over each assembled bagel half to brighten flavors.
Final seasoning and serve
Finish with a light crack of black pepper and, if desired, an extra pinch of sea salt (use sparingly because capers and salmon are salty). Add optional tomato or cucumber slices and microgreens if using. Serve immediately while bagels are still slightly warm.
Plating & Storage
To store leftovers: keep smoked salmon in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Keep shmear refrigerated up to 4 days. Toasted bagels are best consumed same day; refrigerate any unused bagels and re-toast before serving.
