Base Soda

Sweetener & Preservative

Method

Prepare Glass and Ice

1

Chill a 12-oz glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill the glass with ice cubes until about three-quarters full. Cold glass and ice help keep carbonation and flavor.

Add Sweetener and Flavor

2

Measure syrups

If using concentrated flavor syrup, measure 1 teaspoon into a small pour spout or measuring spoon. If you prefer a sweeter soda, you may increase to 1 1/2 tsp. If using fresh orange juice for orange soda, measure 1 tablespoon.

3

Add 1 tablespoon of simple syrup to the bottom of the chilled glass. The simple syrup ensures the flavoring blends evenly with the carbonated water.

4

Add the chosen flavor syrup (1 teaspoon) to the glass on top of the simple syrup.

Combine with Carbonated Water

5

Slowly pour 3 cups (about 12 fl oz) of cold carbonated water into the glass over the back of a spoon or down the inner side of the glass to preserve carbonation and minimize foaming.

6

Gently stir once or twice with a long spoon to fully dissolve and distribute the syrup, taking care not to stir vigorously to avoid losing carbonation.

Finish and Garnish

7

Taste and adjust: if the soda is too weak, add up to 1/2 tsp more flavor syrup or 1/2 tsp more simple syrup and gently stir; if too strong, add a splash more carbonated water.

8

Add garnish appropriate to the chosen flavor: a lemon or lime wedge for cola/root beer, a maraschino cherry for black cherry, or an orange slice for orange soda.

9

Serve immediately while fizzy.
