Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil. Add a pinch of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 7-8 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot over medium heat, melt 4 tablespoons of butter.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute to form a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture is smooth and begins to thicken, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.

  5. 8

    Season Sauce

Add salt, black pepper, and garlic powder to taste, stirring well to combine.

Combining and Serving

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked pasta to the cheese sauce and stir until well coated.

  2. 10

    Prepare Topping (if using)

In a small bowl, mix together breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and paprika.

  3. 11

    Bake (optional)

If using a topping, transfer mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes until golden brown.

  4. 12

    Serve

Serve hot, garnished with additional cheese or herbs if desired.
