Corn Dog Batter

Hot Dogs

Method

Prepare the Corn Dog Batter

  1. 1

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine 1 cup of cornmeal, 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 2 tablespoons of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Whisk together until well blended.

  2. 2

    Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup of milk, 1 large egg, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil until smooth.

  3. 3

    Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are okay.

Prepare Hot Dogs

  1. 4

    Skewer the Hot Dogs

Insert a wooden skewer into each of the 8 hot dogs, pushing it through the center until it goes about halfway through the hot dog.

Fry the Corn Dogs

  1. 5

    Heat Oil

In a large pot or deep fryer, heat 4 cups of vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Coat Hot Dogs

Dip each skewered hot dog into the corn dog batter, allowing excess batter to drip off.

  3. 7

    Fry Corn Dogs

Carefully lower the coated hot dogs into the hot oil, a few at a time. Fry for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.

  4. 8

    Drain and Cool

Remove the corn dogs from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

Prepare Sides

  1. 9

    Cook Frozen Fries/Sun Chips

Prepare the frozen fries or Sun Chips according to package instructions while the corn dogs are frying.
