Method
Cocktail
- 1
Muddle
In a cocktail shaker, place the strawberry jam and the fresh basil leaves. Using a muddler or the back of a spoon, gently muddle the basil into the jam until the leaves are fragrant and the jam loosens into a spreadable/thinner consistency (about 10–15 seconds).
- 2
Combine
Add the gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, orange liqueur, and egg white (if using) to the shaker with the jam-basil mixture.
- 3
Dry shake
Seal the shaker and shake vigorously without ice for 15–20 seconds. This emulsifies the egg white (if used) and helps integrate the jam.
- 4
Wet shake
Add ice to the shaker (about 1 cup) and shake hard for another 15–20 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold.
- 5
Fine strain
Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or rocks glass using a fine mesh strainer to remove basil bits and any jam seeds for a silky texture. If you prefer a longer drink, pour over fresh ice into a rocks glass instead.
Garnish & Finish
- 6
Optional: Top with 1 oz club soda for a slightly lighter, effervescent version. Gently give a single stir to incorporate.
- 7
Garnish with a thin slice of fresh strawberry and a basil leaf laid on top of the foam or perched on the rim. Add a lemon wheel or twist on the rim for aroma.
- 8
Serve immediately. If the cocktail contains egg white, advise guests to consume the drink promptly.
