Cocktail
- 1
Juice
If not already juiced, cut a fresh grapefruit and lime in half and strain to yield fresh grapefruit and lime juice. Measure out 1 oz grapefruit juice and 0.5 oz lime juice. Straining removes pulp for a smoother texture.
- 2
Add 2 oz white rum, 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz Luxardo Maraschino liqueur, and 0.5 oz simple syrup into a cocktail shaker.
- 3
Fill the shaker with ice (about 4–6 medium cubes). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is frosty and well chilled. This both chills and dilutes the drink to proper balance.
- 4
Double-strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass (or over fresh large ice in a rocks glass if preferred) using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove shards of ice and any pulp.
Garnish & Serve
- 5
Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist skin-side down above the drink and giving it a quick snap, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass, or float a lime wheel on top.
- 6
Optionally, drop a Luxardo cherry into the glass for a touch of color and extra aroma.
- 7
Serve immediately. The Hemingway is best enjoyed chilled and fresh.
