Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for 3–5 minutes or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the drink.

  2. 2

    Mix base spirits

Fill a mixing glass or cocktail shaker with the ice cubes. Add 2 oz London dry gin and 0.5 oz Dewar's blended Scotch. If you prefer a slightly drier, more classic Martini profile with a bridging note, add 0.25 oz dry vermouth (optional).

  3. 3

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture smoothly for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (about 15–20 full turns). Stirring preserves clarity and the silky mouthfeel rather than aerating the drink.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Dump the ice water from the chilled glass (if used) and briefly wipe the inside with a clean cloth so it's cold but not waterlogged.

  5. 5

    Strain

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or martini glass to remove small ice shards.

  6. 6

Swirl of Dewar's (optional emphasized finish)

For a pronounced Scotch accent, before adding the cocktail to the glass, pour 0.25–0.5 oz of Dewar's into the chilled glass, swirl to coat the inside, then discard any excess or leave it in the glass. Alternatively, the 0.5 oz included in the mix already provides the intended 'swirl' flavor.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 7

    Skewer olive

Thread a pitted large green olive onto a cocktail pick. If you like a saltier note, use a stuffed olive (garlic or blue cheese).

  2. 8

    Optional zest rinse

If using citrus zest for aroma, express the oils by holding the zest over the glass and giving it a quick twist, then discard or place on the rim.

  3. 9

    Finish and serve

Place the olive on the pick across the rim or drop it directly into the cocktail. Serve immediately while cold.
