Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Build and shake

Chill a rocks glass with large ice or chill a coupe if serving up. In a cocktail shaker, add 2 oz J. Carver Runestone Straight Rye, 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.75 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Fill the shaker with ice (enough to reach about 3/4 full).

  2. 2

    Shake

Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the exterior shows condensation. This both chills and lightly dilutes the drink to balance the rye's intensity and the lemon's acidity.

  3. 3

    Strain and serve

If serving on the rocks: place a large ice cube in a rocks glass and double-strain the cocktail over the ice to remove small ice shards and pulp. If serving up: strain into a chilled coupe glass.

Garnish & Finish

  1. 4

Express the lemon twist over the surface of the drink by holding the peel with the outer yellow side facing down and giving it a quick twist to release the oils. Run the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink (or discard, per preference). Serve immediately.
