Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink to ensure the cocktail stays cold and the aroma is preserved.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

Add 2 oz gin, 1/2 oz maraschino liqueur, 1/4 oz crème de violette, and 3/4 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice into a cocktail shaker.

  3. 3

    Add ice and shake

Fill the shaker with enough ice (about 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and slightly frosted. This dilutes and chills the cocktail to the proper balance.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass and strain

Discard ice water from the chilled glass if used. Double-strain the mixture into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh (or julep) strainer to catch small ice shards and any pulp from the lemon juice.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Express the oils from a fresh lime twist over the surface of the cocktail by holding the twist over the drink and pinching it gently so the oils spray out, then run the peel around the rim. Drop the twist onto or beside the drink as a garnish.

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately while cold. The Aviation is best enjoyed promptly so the floral notes from the crème de violette remain bright.
