Form patties
Divide the 1 lb ground beef into four equal portions (about 4 oz each). Gently form each portion into a thin patty about 4 inches in diameter; do not overwork the meat. Press a small dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to reduce puffing while cooking.
Season patties
Season both sides of each patty with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, dividing the measured amounts evenly between the patties.
Cook patties
Heat a large skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil or butter and swirl to coat. When shimmering, add two patties (do not crowd). Cook 2.5–3 minutes on the first side without moving, until a brown crust forms. Flip and cook 1.5–2 minutes more for medium doneness. Place one slice of American cheese on each patty during the last 30–45 seconds and cover the pan briefly to melt. Transfer cooked patties to a warm plate and loosely tent with foil. Repeat with the remaining two patties.
Assemble double cheeseburgers
Spread 1 tablespoon mayonnaise on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Place a lettuce leaf, then one cheeseburger patty, two pickle slices, then another cheeseburger patty on top of the first, followed by two tomato slices and two onion slices. Spread ketchup and mustard (to taste) on the top bun and close the sandwich. If you prefer sauce distributed differently, swap mayonnaise with ketchup/mustard per your preference.
Toppings & Buns
Prepare condiments and toppings
Arrange pickle slices, tomato slices, onion slices, and lettuce so they are ready for quick assembly. Mix mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard if you prefer a combined burger sauce, or keep them separate.
Meal Sides (Fries + Drink)
Cook the 12 oz frozen French fries according to package instructions. For oven baking: preheat oven to package temperature (typically 425°F / 220°C), toss fries lightly with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and spread in a single layer on a baking sheet; bake 18–25 minutes, turning halfway, until golden and crisp. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt immediately after baking. For air-fryer: air-fry at 400°F (200°C) for 10–15 minutes, shaking occasionally. For deep-fry: fry per package until golden, drain on paper towels, and season with salt.
Pour 2 cups of soft drink or iced tea into glasses and serve chilled if desired.
Finishing & Serving
Place each assembled double cheeseburger on a plate with a portion of fries. Serve immediately while patties and cheese are hot. Provide extra condiments on the side as desired.
