Burger Patties

Condiments (Optional)

Method

Burger Patties

1

Form patties

Divide the 1 lb ground beef into two equal portions (about 8 oz each). Gently form each portion into a loose patty about 4 inches in diameter and roughly 3/4 inch thick in the center (slight indent in the middle to prevent bulging). Avoid overworking the meat—handle just enough to form the shape.

2

Season patties

Season both sides of each patty with kosher salt (about 1/2 tsp per side total) and freshly ground black pepper. If using, lightly brush or sprinkle 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce over the top of each patty.

3

Cook patties — grill method

Preheat a grill to medium-high (about 400°F / 200°C). Oil the grates or rub patties with 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Place patties on the grill and cook for 3–4 minutes per side for medium (internal temperature ~160°F / 71°C for well-done; remove slightly earlier for medium-rare to medium depending on desired doneness and local food-safety guidance). In the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place a cheese slice on each patty, close the grill lid and let cheese melt.

4

Cook patties — stovetop / pan-fry method

Heat a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. When oil is shimmering, add patties and cook 3–4 minutes without moving to develop a crust. Flip and cook another 3–4 minutes. In the final 30–45 seconds, place a cheese slice on each patty and cover the pan with a lid to melt the cheese.

Cheese & Toppings

5

While patties are cooking (or during a short resting period), toast the buns: melt about 1 tablespoon unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat and place cut-side down buns until golden and lightly crisp, about 30–60 seconds. Prepare toppings: wash lettuce and pat dry, slice tomato and red onion into rounds, and arrange pickles.

6

Assemble burgers: place the cooked patty with melted cheese on the bottom bun. Add lettuce leaf, 2 tomato slices, 2 onion slices, and 2 pickle slices (adjust per preference). Spread condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise) on the top bun or bottom bun as desired, then close the burger.

Condiments (Optional)

7

If using condiments, spoon or spread ketchup, mustard, and/or mayonnaise onto the bun interior to taste before assembling. For a simple classic build: 1 tablespoon ketchup on the bottom or top bun and 1 teaspoon mustard, with mayonnaise if desired.

Sides (Optional)

8

Oven or air-fryer fries

If using frozen fries, cook according to package instructions (typically 20–25 minutes at 425°F / 220°C in oven, flipping halfway; or 12–16 minutes at 400°F / 200°C in an air fryer). Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon salt after cooking.

9

Pan-fry fresh potato wedges

If using fresh wedges, toss potato wedges in 1 tablespoon oil and a pinch of salt. Roast in oven at 425°F / 220°C for 25–30 minutes, turning once, until golden and tender.
