Cocktail Base (per drink)

Method

Preparation

1

Chill glass (optional)

If you prefer a colder cocktail, place the serving glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the drink.

2

Rim the glass (optional)

Rub the lime wedge around the outer rim of the glass. Pour the coarse salt onto a small plate and roll the moistened rim through the salt to coat. Tap off any excess.

Mixing

3

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 3/4 full). Add 2 oz reposado tequila, 1 oz orange liqueur, and 1 oz fresh lime juice to the shaker.

4

Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds, until the shaker is frosty and well chilled. This dilutes the drink slightly and brightens the flavors.

5

Strain the cocktail into the prepared glass. For a classic presentation, serve over fresh ice in a rocks glass. For a 'straight up' serve, double-strain into a chilled coupe or martini glass.

6

Garnish with the remaining lime wedge on the rim or floated in the drink.

Serving Notes

7

Taste and adjust: if the drink is too tart, increase orange liqueur by 1/4 oz next time; if too sweet, add a splash more lime juice.

8

To make a pitcher (6 servings), multiply ingredients by 6 and stir with ice in a large pitcher, then pour over fresh ice in individual glasses; do not shake the entire pitcher.
