Method
Syrups & Bases
Make blackstrap molasses syrup (if not pre-made)
Combine 1/2 cup blackstrap molasses with 1/2 cup hot water and 1 tablespoon brown sugar in a small jar. Stir until the molasses and sugar are fully dissolved. Cool to room temperature before using. Keeps refrigerated up to 2 weeks.
Measure and combine 0.75 oz of the blackstrap molasses syrup, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 2 oz cooled rooibos tea, and 1 oz cold-brewed chicory coffee into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. The rooibos provides a silky, warming tea body while the chicory coffee adds bold, roasted notes without heavy acidity.
Add 3 dashes orange bitters (or 3 drops of orange extract) into the mixture to lift the flavors and add a gentle citrus top note.
Mixing & Chilling
Fill the shaker or mixing glass with ice. Shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds (if using a sealed shaker) or stir briskly for 15–20 seconds if you prefer less dilution. The goal is to chill and slightly dilute the syrup-heavy base so the drink is silky, not cloying.
Prepare a rocks glass by placing a single large ice cube (or several large cubes) into it.
Strain the chilled mixture over the large ice cube into the prepared glass.
Carbonation & Finish
Top the drink with 2 oz cold sparkling water or club soda. Pour gently to preserve carbonation and create a light effervescence that balances the syrup and coffee notes.
Express the oils from the fresh orange peel over the surface by holding it skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a firm squeeze to release the oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the drink as garnish.
Optionally, flame the orange zest or add a toasted orange wheel on top for a warming aroma and a dramatic presentation that complements the drink’s silky, bold character.
