Coffee Beans & Grind
Water
Equipment & Optional Add-ins
Method
Preparation
Weigh & heat
Weigh 60 g (0.06 kg) of dark roast whole coffee beans for a 1 liter batch (yield ~6–8 8-oz cups). Fill a kettle and heat filtered water to 92–96°C (197–205°F). Reserve about 50 ml of hot water for rinsing the filter and pre-wetting.
Grind
Grind the 60 g of dark roast beans to a medium-coarse grind for pour-over or drip (if using AeroPress use medium-fine; for French press use coarse). Aim for a grind that allows 3.5–4.5 minutes total contact time for pour-over/drip systems. Grind immediately before brewing to preserve oils and aroma.
Prepare filter and vessel
Place the paper filter in the brewer (or insert metal filter). Pour the 50 ml hot water through the filter into the brew vessel to rinse paper taste and preheat vessel. Discard rinse water (or use it to warm serving carafe).
Brewing (Pour-over / Drip style, 1:16 ratio)
Set coffee bed
Put the freshly ground coffee into the filter and gently level the bed so the grounds are even.
Bloom
Start a timer. Pour 90–100 ml of hot water (about 1.5 times the coffee weight in grams) evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Allow coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds to release CO2—this improves extraction and flavor clarity.
Main pour
After the bloom (30–45 s), pour in water slowly and steadily in concentric circles or back-and-forth motion, avoiding the edges, until total water added reaches 960–1000 ml (1 liter). Maintain a steady pour rate so that final drawdown finishes at about 3:30–4:30 minutes from the start (total brew time). If using a drip machine, fill the reservoir with 1 liter of filtered water and start the brew cycle.
Final drawdown
Allow the brew to finish dripping completely. If drawdown is too fast (<3 minutes), use a finer grind next time; if too slow (>5 minutes), use a coarser grind.
Finishing & Serving
Seasoning (optional)
For particularly bitter dark roasts, optionally stir a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of salt into the carafe to smooth bitterness. Taste first, then add if desired.
Serve
Transfer the brewed coffee to a pre-warmed carafe or cups. Serve black to enjoy the dark roast profile, or add milk and/or sweetener to taste. Use the 10 g of extra beans if you want to make a small espresso-style concentrate with an AeroPress or for topping up freshly brewed coffee.
Storage note
Store unused whole beans in an airtight, opaque container at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Use within 2–3 weeks for best flavor.
