Method
Preparation
Bring protein to room temperature
Remove the sausage links/patty, bacon, or ham steak from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes while you prepare pans and other ingredients. Pat dry any wet surfaces with paper towel.
Preheat pan
Place a heavy skillet (cast iron or nonstick) over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon oil or butter. Allow the fat to warm for 1 minute until shimmering but not smoking.
Cooking Sausage Links or Patty
Sear and cook links
If using 3 links: place them in the preheated skillet spaced apart. Cook over medium heat, turning every 2–3 minutes so all sides brown evenly, about 10–12 minutes total until the internal temperature reads 160°F (71°C) for pork sausage. If they brown quickly, reduce heat to medium-low to finish cooking through without burning.
Cook patty
If using 1 large formed patty: set it in the skillet and cook 4–5 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula to ensure even contact. Cook until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) and juices run clear, about 8–10 minutes total. Adjust heat if exterior browns too fast.
Cooking Bacon
Fry bacon in skillet
For 4 bacon strips: lay strips in a cold skillet (no more than one layer). Turn heat to medium. Cook 3–5 minutes per side depending on thickness and desired crispness. Turn frequently for even rendering. For chewier bacon cook shorter; for crispier cook longer and drain on paper towels.
Optional glaze
If glazing: during the last 1–2 minutes of cooking, brush the top-side of each strip with about 1 teaspoon maple syrup or sprinkle brown sugar. Flip once more and allow glaze to set briefly (watch closely to avoid burning).
Drain and season
Transfer bacon to a paper-towel–lined plate to drain. If desired, sprinkle a light pinch of black pepper while still warm.
Cooking Thick Ham Steak
Sear and heat through
For one thick ham steak (about 1/2–3/4 inch): add to the preheated skillet and cook 3–4 minutes per side over medium heat until nicely browned and warmed through. If the ham is bone-in or very thick, reduce heat to medium-low after browning and cook an additional 2–3 minutes per side until heated through.
Optional glaze for ham
For a sweet glaze: brush 1 teaspoon maple syrup or a sprinkle of brown sugar onto the ham during the last minute of cooking; flip once to set the glaze. Finish with a squeeze of lemon if desired to cut sweetness.
Finishing & Serving
Season cooked protein with a few cracks of black pepper and salt to taste (if you didn’t pre-salt). Garnish with chopped parsley and serve immediately with optional lemon wedge. If you prepared multiple protein types, keep finished items warm on a low oven rack (200°F / 95°C) while finishing others.
