Oatmeal

Method

Oatmeal

1

Measure ingredients

Measure 1 cup rolled oats, 1 cup water, and 1 tsp salt. Having ingredients ready makes cooking smooth.

2

Bring liquid to a simmer

In a small to medium saucepan, combine 1 cup water and 1 tsp salt. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat.

3

Add oats and cook

Stir in 1 cup rolled oats. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, for 4–6 minutes until most of the liquid is absorbed and oats are creamy. For firmer oats cook closer to 4 minutes; for creamier oats cook up to 6 minutes.

Finishing & Serving

4

Warm the milk (optional)

While oats finish cooking, gently warm 1 cup whole milk in a small saucepan or microwave until warm but not boiling (about 30–45 seconds in the microwave or 2–3 minutes on low). Warming the milk keeps the oatmeal hot and prevents cooling when added.

5

Finish oats with butter and brown sugar

Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in 1 tsp butter (if using) until melted. Add 2 tbsp packed brown sugar and stir until dissolved and incorporated. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.

6

Add milk and toppings

Pour the warmed milk over the oatmeal and stir to combine to your desired consistency. Sprinkle 1 tsp ground cinnamon if using and top with 1/2 cup fresh fruit if desired.

7

Serve

Divide into bowls and serve immediately while hot. Offer extra milk and brown sugar at the table for personal adjustment.
