Brew espresso
Brew a fresh, strong espresso (about 1 oz). Let it rest for 20–30 seconds so it cools slightly but remains hot enough to create crema when shaken.
- 3
Combine ingredients
In a cocktail shaker, add 1 cup of ice, 2 oz vodka, 1 oz freshly brewed espresso, 1 oz espresso liqueur, and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer a touch of sweetness.
- 4
Dry shake (optional)
For a richer crema, first shake the ingredients without ice for 8–10 seconds (dry shake). This step helps emulsify the espresso and liqueur into a froth.
- 5
Wet shake
Add ice (if you didn’t already) and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until the shaker is well chilled and the exterior becomes frosty. Aim for a good foam on top from the espresso.
- 6
Strain
Discard ice from the chilled glass (if used). Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne and fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and ensure a smooth texture with a foamy crema on top.
- 7
Garnish and serve
Garnish with 3 coffee beans placed on the crema. Serve immediately.
