Hot Toddy

Method

Hot Toddy

1

Prepare glass and spices

Warm a mug by rinsing it briefly with hot tap water or pouring a small amount of boiling water into it, then discarding the rinse. This helps keep the toddy hot longer. Place the whole cloves and optional star anise in the bottom of the warmed mug.

2

Add honey and lemon

Spoon 1 1/2 tablespoons honey into the mug, then add 1/2 ounce (about 1 tablespoon) freshly squeezed lemon juice.

3

Pour hot water

Pour 8 fl oz (about 240 ml) of piping hot water (just off boil, ~95–100°C) into the mug over the honey and lemon. Stir gently to dissolve the honey completely and to distribute the spices.

4

Add whiskey and cinnamon

Add 2 fl oz (about 60 ml) of whiskey to the mug and stir once more. Tuck the cinnamon stick into the mug so it can infuse. If using, lightly grate a pinch of nutmeg on top.

5

Garnish and rest

Float the lemon slice on top or garnish on the rim. Let the toddy steep for 1–2 minutes to allow the spices to release flavor; taste and adjust: more honey if you prefer sweeter, more lemon for brightness, or an extra 1/2 oz whiskey for strength.

6

Serve

Serve hot, with a small spoon to remove whole cloves or star anise if desired. Sip slowly and reheat gently if it cools.
