Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare glass

Chill a coupe or Nick & Nora glass by placing it in the freezer for a few minutes or filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Measure and combine

In a mixing glass or shaker filled halfway with ice (about 1 cup), pour 1 oz rye whiskey, 3/4 oz blended Scotch, 1/2 oz sweet vermouth and 1/4 oz orange curaçao. Add 2 dashes Angostura bitters.

  3. 3

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full spoon turns) until well-chilled and slightly diluted. Aim for the mixing glass to become cold to the touch and for small, clear chips of ice to appear in the liquid.

  4. 4

    Strain

Discard the ice or water from the chilled serving glass. Double-strain the cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled coupe/Nick & Nora using a Hawthorne or julep strainer; a fine-mesh strainer is optional if you prefer an extra silky pour.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Express the oils from one piece of orange peel over the surface by holding it skin-side down and giving it a firm twist, then run the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink (or discard for a lighter citrus note).

  6. 6

    Serve

Serve immediately while cold. The Best Friend Cocktail is sipped slowly to appreciate the balance between spicy rye, gentle smoke from the Scotch, sweet vermouth and bright orange curaçao.
