Fresh Orange Juice

Method

Fresh Orange Juice

1

Prepare oranges

Wash the oranges under cool running water and pat dry. Roll each orange firmly on the countertop with the palm of your hand to soften and loosen the juices. Cut each orange in half crosswise.

2

Juice the oranges

Using a citrus juicer (manual reamer or electric), juice the oranges into a bowl or directly into a measuring cup. If using a manual reamer, press and rotate each half to extract as much juice as possible. Strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher if you prefer pulp-free juice; skip straining if you want pulp.

3

Adjust consistency and sweetness

Taste the freshly squeezed juice. If it’s too strong or concentrated, add up to 1/4 cup cold water and stir. If it’s not sweet enough, stir in up to 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or 1 teaspoon simple syrup until dissolved. If you’d like a brighter flavor, add 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice and mix.

4

Chill and serve

Fill glasses with ice cubes if desired. Pour the orange juice into glasses, garnish each with a mint sprig if using, and serve immediately. Leftover juice can be refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 48 hours; stir or shake before serving as separation may occur.
