Method
Oatmeal Base
Combine liquids and oats
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1.5 cups water, 0.5 cups milk, and 1/4 tsp salt. Bring to a gentle simmer (do not boil vigorously).
Add oats and cook
Stir in 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring frequently, until oats are tender and the mixture is creamy, about 5–7 minutes. If mixture becomes too thick, add up to 2–4 tablespoons additional water or milk to reach desired consistency.
Finish oatmeal
Once cooked, remove from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or oil for extra creaminess if using. Taste and adjust salt if needed.
Toppings Assembly (choose up to 3)
Prepare chosen toppings
Select up to three toppings from the Available Toppings section. If choosing diced green apple, toss apple pieces with a light squeeze of lemon (optional) to prevent browning. If choosing fresh berries, rinse and pat dry.
Plate oatmeal
Spoon the cooked oatmeal into a bowl (about 1 serving). Smooth the surface slightly to create separate areas for toppings if desired.
Add toppings
Arrange up to three chosen toppings on top of the oatmeal. Suggested combinations: (1) granola + fresh berries + drizzle of honey; (2) brown sugar + cinnamon + raisins; (3) diced green apple + craisins + a sprinkle of granola.
Optional Finishers
If desired, drizzle 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey over the assembled oatmeal and toppings. Serve immediately while warm.
