Method
Prepare Glass & Ice
Chill & Fill
Chill a tall serving glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes if desired. Fill the glass about three-quarters full with ice cubes (approximately 1 cup).
Build the Fountain Soda
Measure Syrup
Pour the cola syrup (0.25 cup) directly over the ice. If making a flavored variation, add the chosen additional syrup: 1 tsp cherry for cherry cola, 1 tsp lime syrup or fresh lime juice for lime soda, or 1/2 tsp vanilla syrup for vanilla cola. You can combine flavors (for example, 1 tsp cherry + 1/2 tsp vanilla) to taste.
Add Carbonation
Slowly pour chilled carbonated water (2 cups) down the inside of the glass over the back of a spoon or along the side to preserve carbonation and avoid excessive foaming. Pour until the glass is nearly full, leaving about 1/2 inch of headroom.
Gentle Stir
Use a long bar spoon or straw to gently stir the syrup and carbonated water 3–4 strokes just until the syrup is evenly distributed. Avoid vigorous stirring to keep carbonation.
Finish & Garnish
Taste and adjust: if you prefer a sweeter or stronger flavor, add more syrup in 1/4 tsp increments and stir gently. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and a lime wedge or lemon slice as appropriate (lime for lime soda, lemon optional for cola). Serve immediately with a straw.
