Store-bought potato chips (choose one)

Optional accompaniments

Method

Selecting and serving chips

1

Choose a flavor

Select one bag of the listed flavors: Lays Original, Baked Lays, KC BBQ, Miss Vickie's Jalapeño, or Sea Salt & Vinegar. Purchase a single bag per person or more depending on appetite (common household bag sizes range from 5–10 oz).

2

Inspect the bag for freshness and intact packaging. Check the "best by" date if available.

3

Open the bag carefully by tearing or cutting across the top. If you want to keep chips from going stale quickly, avoid fully emptying the bag into a bowl; instead, fold the top of the bag down to create a small opening to pour from.

4

Serve

Pour chips into a serving bowl or place the bag on the table for casual snacking. For parties, transfer chips to a wide bowl to allow easy grabbing. If serving multiple flavors, use separate bowls and label them if desired.

Optional dips and pairings

5

Simple sour cream dip

If using sour cream as a dip: spoon 1 cup into a small bowl, stir briefly to smooth, and garnish with a pinch of chopped fresh chives or a sprinkle of onion powder if available. Serve immediately alongside the chips.

6

Prepackaged dips

If using store-bought chive & onion dip or ranch, open the container and place it next to the chips. For ketchup as a casual pairing, pour into a small dipping ramekin.

7

For spicy chips (Miss Vickie's Jalapeño), consider serving cooling dips (sour cream or ranch). For BBQ or Salt & Vinegar, plain or simple dips work best so they don't compete with the chip flavor.

Storage and leftovers

8

To keep an opened bag of chips fresh, squeeze as much air out as possible and fold the top tightly. Store upright in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

9

For longer storage after opening, place chips in an airtight container or heavy-duty resealable plastic bag and remove excess air before sealing.

10

Consume opened chips within 3–5 days for best texture; baked varieties may stale faster.
