Choose four beers that you want to include in the sampler. Aim for a variety of styles (for example: one light lager or pilsner, one pale ale or IPA, one amber or brown ale, and one stout or porter) to provide contrast and showcase different flavor profiles.

Select beers

Ensure the taster glasses are clean and free of soap residue. Rinse each glass with cold water just before pouring to help preserve head and aroma, and place them on the tray or flight paddle in the order you want guests to taste them (typically lightest to heaviest).

Prepare glassware

Hold each glass at a 45-degree angle and pour the beer gently down the side until the glass is about three-quarters full; straighten the glass and finish with a little foam (about 1/2 inch) to release aromatics. Repeat for all four beers, placing each filled glass in its designated spot on the tray or paddle.

Pour beers

Place a small label, tasting token, or write the beer name/number next to each glass so tasters know which beer is which. If conducting a blind tasting, label only with numbers and keep the list of beers separate.

Label samples

Provide a carafe or bottles of water and small plain crackers or slices of bread alongside the flight for palate cleansing between samples. Encourage tasters to sip water and eat a cracker between beers to reset their palate.

If desired, include brief tasting notes or a scorecard for appearance, aroma, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression so tasters can record their thoughts.

Serve the flight promptly after pouring. If beers are on draft, keep lines clean and at appropriate serving temperatures (lagers cooler around 35–45°F / 2–7°C; ales slightly warmer around 45–55°F / 7–13°C) to best showcase flavors.
